Understanding Endodontics and Root Canal Therapy at Our Poway Dental Office

Endodontics is the dental specialty focusing on the internal structures of the tooth, particularly the “pulp,” which houses blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue. When the pulp becomes infected, a root canal is necessary to remove the infection and prevent further damage, including the potential loss of the tooth. Despite common myths, root canals at our practice are performed with maximum comfort in mind, dispelling fears of pain or trauma.

Recognizing the Signs of an Infected Tooth

If you notice any of the following symptoms, it could indicate an infected dental pulp, which might require a root canal:

  • Pain
  • Long-lasting sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Tenderness when touched or while chewing
  • Discoloration of the tooth
  • Swelling
  • Drainage from the tooth
  • Tenderness in nearby lymph nodes or gums

It’s important to remember that not all infected pulp cases show symptoms and may only be detectable by a dentist during routine checks. Conversely, these symptoms don’t always indicate a need for a root canal, but they do warrant a professional evaluation.

What to Expect During a Root Canal Procedure

Dr. Abadan ensures that the root canal process is as pain-free and efficient as possible. The procedure begins with a local anesthetic to eliminate discomfort, followed by isolating the affected tooth. Dr. Abadan then removes the infected pulp through an opening in the crown of the tooth, cleanses the pulp chamber and root canals, and reshapes them to receive a filling.

After thorough cleaning and shaping, the canals are filled with a biocompatible material to seal them. A temporary filling might be placed to cover the opening until a permanent restoration, like a crown, is ready. The treatment may require a few visits to ensure that the tooth regains its full functionality and aesthetics.
