Instructions Following Dental Implant Surgery

General healing guidance after dental implant surgery. Your treating clinician's personalized instructions always take priority.

Important notice

Follow the personalized written and verbal instructions provided by your treating dentist or surgeon. Those instructions take priority over this general website information. Call Gentle Dentistry of Poway at (858) 485-8420 when you are uncertain about your recovery. For severe facial swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, chest pain, loss of consciousness, or another life-threatening concern, call emergency services immediately.

The first day

Bleeding

Mild oozing or blood-tinged saliva can occur after surgery. Keep the gauze positioned as instructed and apply steady pressure. Avoid repeatedly removing the gauze to check the area.

Contact the office when bleeding remains heavy, does not improve with the instructions provided, or causes concern.

Protect the surgical site

Do not disturb the area with your fingers, tongue, toothbrush, or other objects. Do not pull the lip or cheek repeatedly to inspect the site.

Eating and drinking

Choose cool or lukewarm soft foods and drink water. Avoid foods that are hard, sharp, sticky, or likely to become trapped around the surgical area. Do not chew directly on the site unless your dentist has told you it is safe.

Avoid using a straw when instructed because suction may interfere with early healing.

Medication

Take prescribed or recommended medication exactly as directed. Do not exceed the labeled or prescribed dose. Tell the office about allergies, side effects, pregnancy, medical conditions, anticoagulants, or medication interactions.

Contact a medical professional immediately for signs of a serious allergic reaction.

Activity

Rest after surgery and avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, or activities that increase bleeding or throbbing until your treating clinician says they are safe.

Swelling and discomfort

Some swelling, tenderness, or bruising may occur. Use cold packs only as instructed and protect the skin with a cloth barrier. Swelling patterns vary based on the procedure.

Contact the office when pain or swelling is severe, rapidly worsening, returns after improving, or is accompanied by fever, pus, foul taste, difficulty opening, or other concerning symptoms.

Oral hygiene

Keeping the mouth clean supports healing, but the surgical site must be treated gently.

  • Brush and floss the rest of the mouth as directed.
  • Avoid direct trauma to the surgical area.
  • Use prescribed or recommended rinses exactly as directed.
  • Do not use vigorous rinsing until your clinician says it is appropriate.
  • Do not use a water flosser around the site unless specifically approved.

Smoking, vaping, and tobacco

Smoking, vaping, and tobacco can interfere with healing and implant success. Avoid them before and after surgery according to your clinician's instructions. Ask the office for help finding cessation resources if needed.

Sutures and healing components

Do not pull or cut sutures. Some sutures dissolve and others require removal. A healing cap or temporary restoration may feel different during early healing.

Call the office if a component feels loose, the bite feels unusually heavy, a temporary restoration breaks, or you notice movement in the area.

Diet during healing

Advance your diet only as comfort and your clinician's instructions allow. Continue to avoid direct pressure on the implant site. Good hydration and adequate nutrition support recovery.

Follow-up visits

Keep all scheduled follow-up appointments even when the area feels normal. The dentist needs to evaluate soft-tissue healing, cleanliness, stability, bite, and readiness for the next phase.
